ANNUAL REPORT

In 2021 we were lucky enough to be presented to PASTRES, Pastoralism, Uncertainty and Resilience: Global Lessons from the Margin.

A research programme funded by the European Research Council (ERC). They aim to learn from the ways that pastoralists respond to uncertainty and apply such lessons from these margins to current global challenges.

The team at PASTRES needed to create an annual report for an upcoming conference. They were particularly interested in devising a new visual language they could establish and reuse throughout their branding without becoming tiresome or overpowering over time.

BREIFINGS

Following the success of the PASTRES annual report, we were later commissioned to design a series of double-sided A4 briefings across 8 different languages. Through the use of simplistic graphics and bold blocks of solid colour, we delivered a series of well-designed educational briefings.

DESIGN LANGUAGE

As the request for more assets came in, the creation of the graphics and iconography expanded into a fully comprehensive design ecosystem. Based on the PASTRES logo, we implemented a design system using geometric shapes and uncomplicated lines to replicate graphical representations of flora and fauna.

Complimented by lines or a series of dots between graphical elements, the idea was to express a level of migratory movement and pastoral interaction on a cultural and global scale in the simplest way possible. This concept later proved to be helpful when creating complementary merchandise.

SEEING PASTORALISM

Finally, as the design process evolved, the team naturally involved us in the design of the website SEEING PASTORALISM. An online space where

stories and images to explore how pastoralists understand, experience and respond to uncertainty.

Here they draw on six places around the world where pastoralists live and work in often variable and uncertain conditions. The images were produced by pastoralists and a team of researchers from the PASTRES research programme.
